Are you getting value for money?

15/03/2010

It has been a quiet day in work today.  Only a couple of people booked in to coach, and I couldn’t convince anyone else to play with me.

So I had to watch a group of young lads playing with the freeweights for 2 hours and must have done about 50 different exercises with the weights.  They were having great fun, they never stopped doing something the whole time and they left slapping eachother on the back congratulating for a job well done.

So are these boys (and you) getting their moneys worth from training?

Of course this question all depends on what they want from training.

If all they want is to be able to say that they have done 2 hours of training full of “stuff”, then they are getting great value for money.

If, on the other hand, they want their training to make them better, fitter, faster and stronger…they are getting rubbish value for money!  They were doing waaay too many useless things…and they were doing them badly!

Don’t let yourself go down the route of just doing “stuff” with no regard as to:

  • What it actually does
  • How it actually effects you
  • Whether it is safe and effective.

Have a definite goal for your training.  Some good goals include:

  • Improving fitness/stamina
  • Improving speed
  • Improving coordination
  • Improving agility
  • Improving balance
  • Improving strength
  • Improving technique
  • Improving power/weight ratio
  • Improving body composition

Then make sure your training, time and money is geared towards these goals.

With the credit crunch, no one wants to just piss money away.  So make sure you are getting value for your training fees.

Make sure your training is:

  • Safe
  • Efficient
  • Effective

OK.  That’s my mini-rant over with.  I’m off to find someone to play with…
